Chinese maritime law is, unsurprisingly, a land of mystery for both Chinese and foreign lawyers. On the one hand, unlike other areas of the Chinese legal system, the maritime legal regime in China has its deep roots in the common law system – employing abundant legal concepts, terms and mechanisms which are unfamiliar to other legal practices in China. On the other hand, such a regime has to adapt itself constantly to the ever-changing Chinese legal system. The past decades has witnessed a giant step forward in respect of the self-evolution of the maritime legal regime in China, which entails strenuous effort in this book to feature the merits and demerits of the same.

This ambitious book presents a clear narrative that assumes no prior expertise in Chinese maritime law. Drawing from her combined academic and practical experience, author Xing Lijuan explores both substantive and procedural components, both legislated and speculated topics, as well as settled and ongoing debates, with jurisprudential and adjudicative implications. The contents of this book are presented and organised with the aim to serve the needs of law students and professors, researchers and practitioners, legislature and judiciary, Chinese and foreign lawyers, and businessmen, working within the maritime industry. In addition to maritime law, the book also makes good reading for those wanting to learn more about Chinese law and international and comparative studies.
