James Stewart is an international family partner with Manches’ family department. He has specific expertise in complex, financial and child cases which often have an international dimension.
James is a Governor of the International Academy of International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (IAML) and a member of the International Section of the American Bar Association (ABA).
In 2003 James was one of the first solicitors in England to train in collaborative family law. He is a founder member of the Collaborative Family Law (CFL) which promotes the use of collaborative law, arbitration, mediation and private judging as practical and confidential methods of avoiding litigation in complex and often high-profile cases.
James writes extensively on international family law issues. He has a particular interest in the development of family law in the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). His articles on Anglo-Russian divorce have appeared in The Times and The Russian Investment Review. He also chairs Manches’ International Wealth Protection Group which focuses on the needs of family offices and relocating clients.
He has acted in a number of ground breaking cases, including the reported case of El Gamal v Al Maktoum [2011] which concerned the recognition of an Islamic marriage. More recently, he has been named “Lawyer of the Week” in the St Valentine’s Day edition of The Times following the widely publicised decision in AI v MT [2013] which concerned the interaction of Jewish religious courts with the English High Court in family matters.
James is a member of The Times Law Panel, an advisory body of 100 of UK’s most prominent lawyers. In April 2013 Spears Magazine included James’s name in a list of England’s top 25 family lawyers.
In a Sunday Observer profile, James was described as “confident and successful, with 20 years on his rivals, his fresh approach to family law is turning heads”.
