本書分兩大部份，第一部份詳述作者於一九三八年考取政府獎學金入讀香港大學，並因此在中國內地先後為英國海軍情報局及中國國民黨軍隊工作。戰後憑勝利獎學金負笈英國牛津大學深造，其後成為大律師。作者與其父於家族中俱排行第七，作者深信有此因緣，才蒙幸運之神如此眷顧，因此英文原著定名為《第七子與法律》。

書中第二部份縷述八宗性質截然不同的案件，案中被告均由作者代表辯護。這些案件包括了峰迴路轉的謀殺案、詐騙案，以及無辜警員險遭上司羅織罪名陷害的案件，內容精彩，耐人尋味。辯方採用的手法引人入勝，讀來趣味盎然。
